Chris Waller hasn’t ruled out a Caulfield Cup start for Group One-winning mare Unforgotten (Fastnet Rock) but it is more likely she could tangle with star stablemate Winx in the Cox Plate.
Waller says he won’t decide Unforgotten’s spring carnival path until after she runs in Saturday’s Gr.1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) in which she is rated a $5 chance.
The Cox Plate, the Caulfield Cup and the Myer Classic are Group One targets that could potentially be on the agenda for the talented four-year-old mare who was purchased out of Curraghmore's 2016 New Zealand Bloodstock draft for $360,000.
Backing up from the Caulfield Stakes into the Caulfield Cup the following Saturday is a possibility, but if she wins the Caulfield Stakes it appears likely she will take on Winx in the Cox Plate.
“She is a very good horse but she is obviously racing against some seasoned weight for age campaigners here, however I feel she will certainly be in the finish,” Waller said.
“Her run on Saturday will determine where she goes next, and there is an outside chance she could go to the Caulfield Cup a week later.
“She will probably head to either the Cox Plate if she wins on Saturday, or the Myer Classic if I thought she was looking for something easier to finish off the preparation.
"I couldn’t be any happier with the way she has come through the Epsom Handicap, obviously she got a long way back and had a chequered passage but she finished the race off stylishly."
Unforgotten has 52.5kg in the Caulfield Cup and is already assured of a start in the A$5m race thanks to her victory in the Australian Oaks.
Unforgotten is rated a $15 chance in the Caulfield Cup, a $26 chance in the Cox Plate and $17 in the Myer Classic.
She is having her first Melbourne run on Saturday and if she runs in the Cox Plate on October 27, it won't be the first time she has taken on Winx.
Unforgotten resumed in the Gr.1 Winx Stakes in August, running sixth but doing her best work late as she finished less than four lengths off Winx. -racenet.com.au
