Flemington test for Gold Mag

Gold Mag is bidding to enhance his burgeoning reputation at Flemington on Saturday, he will take on the Tony McEvoy- trained Illumicon (Nicconi) in what looks a highly competitive BM70 Handicap (1200m).

The lightly raced four-year-old boasts an unbeaten record to date, with two victories from two starts, and is thought to rank high among the Lindsay Park battalion. "We have a big opinion of Gold Mag, we really like him," Ben Hayes told Racing.com.

"If he goes how we think he is going to go on Saturday, I think he'll be a really exciting horse for us going forward. From what we've seen from him at home ... the way he is going I think he can definitely win. He's only lowly rated so he's a horse we are going to take our time with and take him through the grades.”

Hayes suggested Gold Mag, who was raised at Curraghmore, could end up in the Emirates Stakes (registered as LKS Mackinnon) (Gr 1, 2000m) at the end of the spring, though the gelding also holds a Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) entry. – ANZ Bloodstock News
