Weekend Wrap Up 23.07.18

Awapuni trainer Mike Breslin produced Salamanca (Alamosa) to cap off successive placings with an open handicap victory at Te Rapa on Saturday.

Rising eight-year-old Salamanca has been a trusted servant of the stable since his two-year-old days when he won the Listed Champagne Stakes (1200m) at Riccarton giving his sire Alamosa his first stakes winner.

“It was great to see him win his 10th race, it was a very good effort and he’s a cool horse,” Breslin said.

“He doesn’t like the really heavy tracks so he could go back to Te Rapa for an open 1200m next and the other option is Christchurch,” Breslin said.

Salamanca was born and raised at Curraghmore for breeder Graham Hunt, who also bred the triple Group One winning Curraghmore graduate Efficient.

The well-travelled Rodrico (High Chaparral) cashed another cheque when running second at New Plymouth in the Sinclair Electrical and Refrigeration 1800.

The Murray Baker and Andrew Forsman charge put in a game performance on a heavy10 track to finish just .8L off the winner.

Bred by Roncon, Chelsaus (Ireland) and Wynaus and purchased by Guy Mulcaster out of Curraghmore's 2014 New Zealand Bloodstock draft, Rodrico has only been out of the money once in this five-start campaign.

In Australia Pumps (Jimmy Choux) was impressive finishing runner up to a future Oaks prospect at Doomben in the QTIS 2yo Handicap (1600m).

Bred by Nearco Stud, Pumps was purchased by John Morrisey for Mr M Downs out of Curraghmore's 2017 New Zealand Bloodstock draft for $30,000.

Pumps is proving to be another consistent performer by Rich Hill Stud's Jimmy Choux to come off the farm joining the likes of Manolo Blahniq and What Choux Want on the graduates page.
