Colt cut down by injury

A suspensory injury has curtailed the promising Sydney campaign of Gr 1 winner Fully Fledged.
The chestnut son of Align had been in the money in all three of his Australian appearances.
Last time out he had run fourth in in a strong Gr 2 Phar Lap Stakes line-up behind star three-year-olds Heart Of Dreams and Whobegotyou.
Fully Fledged was a $38,000 purchase from Curraghmore’s Carnival Sale draft for owners Alistair Sutherland, Tony Timpson and Peter Walker.
Last season's Ford Diamond Stakes victor has career earnings in excess of $245,000 from three wins and seven placings.
Top trial from Sousa

Sousa returned an excellent AJC Australian Derby trial when he was narrowly denied another Gr 1 victory in Saturday's Rosehill Guineas.
The son of Galileo showed he was approaching peak form at the right time when a fighting second in the 2000 metre feature.
Sousa put the pressure on a long way from home and he will be ideally-suited to the step up to 2400 metres in the Derby.
Bred by Lars Pearson, Sousa was sold through Curraghmore’s 2006 National Weanling Sale draft at Karaka.
The colt was bought by Mark and Shelly Treweek’s Lyndhurst Farm for $150,000 and subsequently sold on for $A420,000 at the Inglis Easter Sale to Woodlands Stud.
The winner of three of his 10 starts, including the Gr 1 Spring Champion Stakes, he has bankrolled more than $620,000.
Curraghmore's other Derby contender is Pre Eminence who wound up from last on the turn in the Guineas to finish seventh.
Staying the game

Promising three-year-old St Ives has put himself in line for a possible trip to the Queensland winter racing carnival.
The lightly-tried son of Pentire broke his maiden at Ballarat last week over 1600 metres after three placings from his four lead-up outings.
"Like all Pentires he needs more ground and we think a fair bit of him," said Paul Moroney, whose brother Mike has St Ives in his Melbourne stable.
Moroney purchased him out of Curraghmore's select draft to Karaka in 2007 for $46,000.
St Ives is a son of the multiple winner Top Cut, a three-quarter sister to dual Gr 1 winner Javelin.

Tragic passing

Curraghmore has lost a much-loved friend with the passing of Marilyn Kent, who was tragically killed in a car accident last weekend.
She enjoyed a long and successful association with the stud since its establishment in 1994.
"She was a dear friend to us all and she will be sadly missed," Gordon Cunningham said.
Marilyn was a passionate breeder and owner and celebrated numerous sale ring and racing successes.
Among her many highlights was a Gr 2 Matamata Breeders' Stakes success with Flying Babe, a filly she bred with her great friend Joan Egan.
They also bred and raced the Gr 2 Rich Hill Mile winner Belle Femme.
Curraghmore extends its sincere condolences to Marilyn's family and friends.
Her funeral will be held at the Manakaua Garden Cemetery on Friday, March 27 at 2.30pm.
Consistency rewarded

Fully Fledged picked up his third cheque in as many Sydney starts when a brave fourth in Saturday's Gr 2 Phar Lap Stakes.
Ridden by Corey Brown, the Align colt was left a sitting duck a long way from home and still held the front halfway down the straight.
However, the quality trio of Heart of Dreams, Whobegotyou and Predatory Pricer finished over the top of him in the closing 200 metres.
Fully Fledged had previously run a pair of thirds, one of them in the Listed Strada Stakes.
Future looks bright

Pentire two-year-old Bridgestone opened his career on an encouraging note when a close second at Ascot in Perth.
The Neville Parnham-trained colt showed a good turn of foot to go under narrowly on debut over 1200 metres.
Bridgestone was bought by West Australian agent John Chalmers for $200,000 from Curraghmore's select draft at Karaka last year.
A half-brother to two winners, he is out of a half-sister to Gr 3 winner Te Akau Class and is expected to show his true worth over more ground.
Marvellous money-spinner

Durable galloper Watchyerback has proved an outstanding money-spinner with his latest success at Eagle Farm taking his career earnings beyond $500,000.
The Daggers Drawn eight-year-old, who won the Gr 3 Standish Handicap in Melbourne as a six-year-old, posted his seventh career victory at the weekend.
Watchyerback was a $9000 buy from Curraghmore's 2003 draft to the Autumn 2YO Breeze-Up Sale at Karaka.
He is out of the imported mare Ballyvaskin, a half-sister to the Gr 1 Irish 2000 Guineas winner Tap On Wood.
Watchyerback's older sister Navaja was a winner both here and in the United States where she was also Gr 3 placed.

Kabalevsky Hong Kong-bound

Kabalevsky's brief New Zealand racing career is over with his imminent departure to Hong Kong.
The three-year-old was a runaway debut winner earlier this month to earn rave reviews from Cambridge trainer Stephen Marsh.
"He's far superior to anything I've ever had - he's something very special," he said.
A son of Giant's Causeway, Kabalevsky is out of the winning Zeditave mare Lucrative Dam, who was also a dual stakes placegetter in Australia.
He was purchased for $170,000 out of Curraghmore's 2007 premier session draft at Karaka by Michael Chang Racing Stables, Hong Kong.
Kabalevsky is owned by there C. H. Chan, whose New Zealand interests are managed by Bruce and Maureen Harvey, of Ascot Farm, Cambridge.
Takapuna home in style

Lightly-tried mare Takapuna added to her record at New Plymouth today with her second career success from a handful of starts.
She raced right away from her Rating 70 sprint rivals to score by a length and a-half.
An Australian-bred four-year-old by General Nediym, she has been genuine to date and has only twice failed to weigh in.
Takapuna was bought out of Curraghmore's 2006 premier draft to Karaka by part-owner Trevor McKee for $76,000.
She is out of the Hennessy mare Cognac Lass, a daughter of the Gr 3 Queen of the Turf Stakes winner Chez Paree.
Hong Kong double

Curraghmore enjoyed dual success in Hong Kong at the weekend with graduates Good Luck Win and Johnson successful at Sha Tin.
By King Cugat, Good Luck Win was originally bought by Riccarton trainer Michael Pitman for $8000 at the 2006 South Island Sale.
He won two of his five starts here before his sale to Hong Kong and now has career earnings of more than $127,000.
Johnson was an original $75,000 weanling purchase at Karaka in 2006 and later sold privately by Curraghmore to leading trainer John Moore.
By Pins, he is a half-brother to Gr 2 Breeders' Stakes winner Deprivation (Win Again HK).
Johnson is a dual Hong Kong winner and has earned more than $180,000 in his nine-start career.

Phar Lap on programme

Cambridge colt Fully Fledged collected another Australian cheque on Saturday with a strong performance at Randwick.
The Align three-year-old hit the line well under 58kg for a close third - giving weight to the first two home - in the Listed Strada Stakes.
The Murray and Bjorn-Baker trained Fully Fledged had also filled a similar position in his Australian debut at Rosehill.
He is now expected to step up to Gr 2 company in next Saturday's Phar Lap Stakes (1500m).
Target hits stakes board

Well-bred four-year-old Target has wasted no time in adding black-type to his family record.
The son of Tale Of The Cat finished strongly for third in Saturday's Listed Bob Hoysted Handicap at Flemington.
Target, out of the Gr 1 winning-mare Saint Cecile, had won two of his previous three career starts.
Bred by Nigel and Adaire Auret, he was sold privately to Australian interests after his forced withdrawal from Curraghmore's yearling draft to Karaka.
Strada in sight

Fully Fledged will make his second Sydney appearance tomorrow when he tackles the $A100,000 Listed Strada Stakes at Randwick.
The Align colt will carry 58kg in the 1200 metre event for three-year-olds and will be ridden by Corey Brown.
The leading jockey partnered Fully Fledged into third at Randwick a fortnight ago in his Australian debut.
It was the Curraghmore-sold chestnut's first start for six weeks and he ran home well after settling back from a wide gate.
Port Vell scores again

The colours made famous by Gr 1 Cox Plate winner El Segundo were back in the winner's circle at Sandown yesterday.
Progressive Pins three-year-old Port Vell followed up a previous Bendigo maiden success with victory over 1600 metres for trainer Colin little.
Port Vell was purchased by Cambridge agent Dean Hawthorne from Curraghmore's select draft to Karaka in 2007 for $120,000.
He is the first foal of the winning Centaine mare Melody D'Amour, a half-sister to multiple winner and Group performer Ten Clicks-Luckswell (HK).





Velocitea too sharp

Velocitea opened her winning account in Melbourne for leading trainer Brian Mayfield-Smith today when she was successful at Sandown.
The Volksraad three-year-old came back from a five-month spell to score over 1000 metres in the hands of Craig Williams.
Velocitea won two her three New Zealand starts, and was stakes placed at Riccarton, before her sale to Australian interests.
She was bred and raced out of Shane Kennedy's stable by Christchurch mother and daughter Raewyn Ramage and Shelley Frost.
Their Braided River Thoroughbreds operation boards several mares at Curraghmore, including the filly's dam Cat Shmea.
All go for Sydney

Pre Eminence will head to Sydney despite failing against the older horses in Saturday's Gr 1 Australian Cup at Flemington.
The three-year-old dropped away in the straight after heading the field up on the home bend.
Trainer Mick Price will press on to Sydney with Pre Eminence, who will revert back to age group racing for the Gr 1 AJC Derby.
The son of Encosta De Lago is the dual Gr 2 winner of the Norman Robinson and Alister Clark Stakes and was Gr 1 placed in the VRC Derby.

Another for Rock Song

Rock Song added to his outstanding winning strike rate in Sydney when successful at Randwick on Saturday.
Trained by Tim Martin, it was his fourth victory in eight appearances and lifted his earnings to nearly $145,000.
Rock Song won narrowly but well and followed up a previous success at Rosehill.
A four-year-old son of Rock Of Gibraltar, he was a $250,000 purchase for Martin from Currraghmore's 2006 premier draft at Karaka.
Rock Song is out of the Woodman mare Wooden Melody, a member of the legendary Eight Carat family.
Heart furthers record

Heart continued his excellent run of form in Queensland when a close second at Doomben at the weekend.
The Faltaat four-year-old has now posted three wins, three seconds and a fourth from seven starts on his current preparation.
Heart was sold through Curraghmore's 2006 premier sale draft for $95,000 and has now won five of his 16 career starts and more than $125,000.
He is a half-brother to Gr 2 Eight Carat Classic winner Spin 'N Grin and multiple Australian winner and Group-performed Mr Smugg.

Runaway debut victory

Stephen Marsh described outstanding debut winner Kabalevsky as a freak after he had toyed with his rivals at Hawera on Sunday.
The Hong Kong-owned son of Giant's Causeway strolled home by seven lengths after two preparatory trial wins.
Marsh, who has stables at Cambridge and Woodville, said the three-year-old was "as good as anything I've had to do with."
Kabalevsky is the first foal of the winning Zeditave mare Lucrative Dame from the family of stakes winner and Gr 1 placegetter Sarah Vee.
Her was sold by Curraghmore for $170,000 to Michael Chang Racing Stables at the 2007 premier sale at Karaka.
From stud to stipe

Former Curraghmore employee Shona Moore has created her own piece of New Zealand racing history.
She has become the country's first female stipendary steward and will assume her Waikato-based position in early May.
Moore has spent the past year as a racing administration trainee at NZ Thoroughbred Racing's national office in Wellington.
"I am delighted to welcome Shona to our stewards' panel and I am particularly pleased that she has come from our own trainee programme," chief stipe Reid Sanders said.
Moore also has overseas experience in racing stables in Ireland and England.
